The postpartum period, also known as the fourth trimester, can be a challenging time when it comes to fashion and style. As your body adjusts and recovers, it’s important to find clothing that fits well and makes you feel confident and beautiful.

But don’t worry! We will cover some postpartum style tips and ideas to help you embrace your unfamiliar (but amazing) body and feel great in your postpartum fashion choices.

Just a heads up, this page may contain Amazon, Etsy, and other affiliate links. We may make a small commission from any clicks at no expense to you. Head over to our disclosure policy for more information.

1. Embracing Your New Body

Before we dive into the styling tips, let’s take a minute to just celebrate your body. Isn’t it amazing? You grew a human! A HUMAN! I’m pretty sure even Wonder Woman hasn’t done that.

Pregnancy and childbirth are life-changing experiences, and your body has accomplished something truly remarkable. Embrace the stretch marks, loose skin, discoloration, extra weight, and saggy boobs, and be proud of what your body has achieved (read more about caring for your skin during and after pregnancy!

2. Comfort is Key

During the fourth trimester – specifically those first few weeks – comfort will probably be more important than style… but you can always have both!

Look for clothing made from soft, breathable fabrics that allow freedom of movement. I specifically love bamboo clothing! It’s not just for our babies.

I highly recommend having one or two quality postpartum loungewear sets (or daytime pajamas, as I like to call them) that you can wear around the house. I love supporting small businesses on Etsy and this bamboo lounge set by Spunbamboo is absolutely amaaaaazing.

However if you are shopping on more of a budget, Amazon has some awesome bamboo items, too! This bamboo loungewear set has a button down top which makes for easy boob access if you are nursing!

Or, look for some fun mommy and me sets like this!

For going out and about, choose items that accommodate your changing body shape, such as loose-fitting tops, stretchy waistbands (I had my baby in the summer and pretty much lived in these lululemon shorts and these lululemon pants), and dresses with forgiving silhouettes.

This dress is one of my favorites because it accentuates the waistline, hides the extra baby weight, AND has a hidden zipper for breastfeeding!

3. Layering for Versatility

Layering is a postpartum fashion secret. It adds depth and interest to your outfits and allows you to adjust your clothing to accommodate changing body temperatures and breastfeeding needs.

If you aren’t already aware, your body goes through some intense hormonal shifts after giving birth. Night sweats are real. Being insanely cold and then smoking hot within minutes is no joke.

Invest in lightweight cardigans, dusters, and versatile scarves that can be easily added or removed as needed. I’m specifically a huge fan of oversized and lightweight sweaters. Here are some of my favorite pieces to layer with:

A postpartum woman wearing a lighweight cardigan.
A woman wearing a white postpartum cardigan.
A beige postpartum fashion scarf on a hanger.

4. Flattering Silhouettes

While your body may not be in its pre-pregnancy shape just yet, there are many ways to flatter your postpartum figure.

Consider empire waistlines, wrap dresses, and A-line skirts that gently drape over your curves and accentuate your assets.

These silhouettes create a balanced and feminine look while providing comfort and ease of movement.

5. Emphasize Your Assets

Focus on highlighting your favorite features and redirecting attention away from areas you may be less comfortable with.

For example, if you love your post-pregnancy curves, choose form-fitting tops and dresses that accentuate your waistline. If you prefer to downplay your midsection, choose flowy tops or statement accessories to draw attention elsewhere.

6. Accessorize with Confidence

Accessories can elevate your postpartum outfits and add a touch of personal style.

Experiment with statement earrings, colorful scarves, bold necklaces, or stylish hats to bring attention to your face and draw the eye upward.

Accessories are a great way to express your personality and complete your look effortlessly.

7. Incorporate Prints and Patterns

Don’t shy away from prints and patterns! They can be your best friends when it comes to disguising any lingering post-baby bumps or marks.

Opt for strategic patterns like vertical stripes or small-scale prints that create an illusion of length and draw attention away from specific areas.

Experiment with floral prints, geometric designs, or classic polka dots to add interest to your outfits.

8. Functional and Fashionable Footwear

Comfortable footwear is a must for any new mom, but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style.

Invest in supportive flats, stylish sneakers, or low-heeled ankle boots that offer comfort and fashion-forward appeal.

Look for shoes that are easy to slip on and off, as well as versatile enough to pair with a variety of outfits.

9. Don’t Forget Lingerie

While outerwear is important, let’s not overlook the significance of well-fitting and comfortable lingerie.

Invest in high-quality nursing bras that provide adequate support and make breastfeeding easier.

Opt for soft, breathable fabrics and seamless designs that minimize irritation and allow easy access. Look for nursing bras with adjustable straps and convenient nursing clips that offer functionality and style. You may also want to avoid underwire if you are breastfeeding!

Or, find a few tops or dresses that give you easy access for nursing! These are some of my favorites:

A postpartum dress on a mannequin.
A redhead postpartum woman wearing the best postpartum clothing for breastfeeding.
A postpartum woman wearing a breastfeeding dress formal style for a wedding.
A postpartum lady wearing a long black postpartum dress with a breastfeeding flap.

10. Celebrate Your Postpartum Curves

Postpartum bodies often have curves that are different from pre-pregnancy.

Embrace your new shape and celebrate your curves by choosing clothing that accentuates and celebrates them. Wrap dresses, flowy tops, and high-waisted bottoms can highlight your curves in a flattering way.

Confidence is key, and owning your postpartum body will radiate beauty.

11. Invest in Postpartum Shapewear

Consider investing in a postpartum body shaper if you’re looking for extra support and shaping.

These postpartum body shapers are designed to provide gentle compression and help smooth out any areas you may be self-conscious about.

Look for shapewear that offers support for the abdomen and waist without compromising comfort. I bought this one after my first baby and loved that it was pretty lightweight but supportive.

12. Mix and Match

Don’t be afraid to mix and match different pieces from your wardrobe to create new outfits.

Combine your favorite pre-pregnancy clothes with some well-chosen postpartum essentials.

Layering tops, cardigans, and jackets can transform a basic outfit into a stylish ensemble. Experiment with different combinations to find what works best for you.

Or find some clothing like this dress that can be worn during and after pregnancy!

13. Stay True to Your Style

Motherhood doesn’t mean you have to completely change your personal style. You can adapt your existing style to accommodate your postpartum body.

Whether you prefer a classic, bohemian, or edgy look, you can always incorporate your signature style into your postpartum fashion choices.

Don’t be afraid to experiment and express yourself through your clothing.

14. Seek Inspiration

Find inspiration from fashion bloggers, influencers, and celebrities who embrace their postpartum bodies. Look for individuals who have a similar body shape or style aesthetic and observe how they dress to feel confident and stylish.

Use their ideas as a starting point and adapt them to suit your own preferences and comfort level.

15. Maternity Clothes for Transition

If you still have some maternity clothes that you love, don’t be afraid to continue wearing them during the postpartum period.

Maternity jeans with stretchy waistbands, loose-fitting tops, and dresses can be both comfortable and flattering.

Transitioning slowly from maternity wear to regular clothing can help ease the adjustment while still feeling fashionable.

16. Online Shopping and Styling Services

Online shopping provides a convenient way to explore a wide range of postpartum fashion options. Many retailers offer specific postpartum collections or sections dedicated to nursing-friendly clothing.

Additionally, some online styling services specialize in curating outfits for new moms. Take advantage of these resources to discover new brands, trends, and styles that suit your postpartum body.

17. Confidence and Self-Care

Remember that fashion is not just about the clothes you wear; it’s also about how you feel. Prioritize self-care and activities that boost your confidence.

Practice positive affirmations, engage in activities you enjoy, and surround yourself with a supportive community. When you feel good from within, it will reflect in your overall style and appearance.

18. Embrace the Change

Postpartum fashion is not about trying to get back to your pre-pregnancy body. It’s about embracing the growth of your body and celebrating the beautiful changes motherhood has brought.

Embrace the journey, be kind to yourself, and focus on feeling comfortable and confident in the present moment with your new precious baby.

As you navigate this beautiful (and disgusting… read more about the ugly truths of the fourth trimester) phase of motherhood, remember that fashion can be a powerful tool for self-expression and boosting your confidence.

Embrace your changing body, prioritize comfort, and experiment with different styles and silhouettes that make you feel beautiful and empowered.

There are no strict rules when it comes to postpartum fashion. It’s about finding what works for you and embracing your unique style.

Shop for comfortable yet stylish clothing options, experiment with prints and patterns and don’t forget the power of accessories to elevate your outfits. Celebrate your postpartum curves and seek inspiration from fashion influencers who embrace their changing bodies.

Postpartum fashion is not about conforming to societal expectations or fitting into a certain mold. It’s about embracing your journey as a new mother and feeling comfortable and confident in your new skin.

Embrace the changes, celebrate your body’s incredible journey, and enjoy this time! Fashion is just one aspect of your postpartum experience, and what truly matters is the love and care you provide to yourself and your baby.

So embrace your postpartum body, have fun with fashion, and rock your postpartum style with confidence and grace!
